I always look forward to spring, when vegetables start to sprout and the blooming flowers bring the promise of the year’s first fruits. This spring brings great bottles to the restaurant from the 2009 vintage. 2009 was a great year in many regions but in particular I like the Loire Valley and Beaujolais. Two regions making wines that make bright daring wines that I love for Spring, and both regions have some very underrated wines, which means value.

LOIRE
The lighter, often green vegetables are best suited to more delicate wines like Sancerre (white or red) or other cool-climate influenced wines. We are lucky that the 2008 and 2009 vintages in the Loire are great for spring preparations featuring spring vegetables and fresh goat cheese. Lucien Crochet’s Croix du Roy (both white and red) continues to deliver some of the best value in Sancerre. But don’t forget about Vouvray and Muscadet, also found in the Loire! You will be hard-pressed to find better light, crisp, mineral whites than Muscadet Sevre et Maine anywhere in the world for $15 at a good wine store.

BEAUJOLAIS
In a region like Burgundy, wine regions that are otherwise known for expensive wines become appealing in approachable ripe vintages like 2009 because the village level wines are often superb and can be found for under $20. And for those with a real sense of adventure there is Beaujolais. Beaujolais is part of Burgundy, but has been relegated to the back burner. A great Morgon, for example, has the potential to offer as much complexity as its northerly neighbors in the Cote de Nuits at a fraction of the price. We are still offering Domaine de la Madonee “Le Perreon” by the glass from 2008, a great fun red spring wine. Come try it.
US
From the U.S., while an overall variable vintage, there are some very good Pinot Noirs coming out of Oregon in 2008 like Evening Land’s “Gotham” made for Gotham Bar and Grill. And from our own backyard, you owe it to yourself to try Hermann J.Wiemer’s Late Harvest Riesling 2009 from the Finger Lakes in northern New York.
Other wine regions to look for value are northwestern Spain, Austria and Germany in a vintage like 2009 or 2010.
